Westport Guide
The best way to get around Westport is to walk. It is a beautiful town to stroll around and best appreciated on foot. If you just want to explore Westport you can travel to the town by bus or train and there will be plenty to see on foot. If however you want to see more of County Mayo, then you will need a car.
Westport is one of those Irish towns that everybody enjoys visiting and where you will feel welcome everywhere you go. The centre of town is built on the river where you can enjoy a walk or stop for a coffee. The streets are narrow and full of restaurants, bars, cafes and excellent shops.
Many of the shops have retained the old shop fronts from byegone days but the quality is superb and you will find fashion, gifts, art, pottery and much more.
Further afiled you can vist the Quays where you can hire a fishing boat or stroll along the shore. There are great views of Clew Bay and Croagh Patrick which is probably one of the most well known mountains in Ireland.
There are hotels and guesthouses in the centre of town, in the area around the Quays and on the roads leading into town. There is an excellent choice of 2 star, 3 star and 4 star properties catering for business, leisure, couples and families.
When you are in Westport you should consider a visit to Westport House which is located close to the Quay in Westport. It is a beautiful and historic 18th century house set in mature parklands and gardens with magnificent views of Clew Bay, The Atlantic coastline and Croagh Patrick.
The house and gardens are open to the public, although there are entry fees. There is also a Pirate Adventure Park which is open during the summer, June to August, and also during the Hallowenn and Easter mid-term breaks. It is worth considering of you have the kids with you – and famiky tickets are available.
But you never have to worry about what to do in Westport. Check into your hotel and ennjoy a massage, a swim or a quiet pint. Stroll around Westport and pick up some gifts for the kids – or whoever is minding them. Enjoy a great pub lunch with fresh seafood chowder and brown sodabread.
Back to the hotel for a quiet read of the papers, a quick shower and then off to dinner. You can simply stroll downstairs to the restaurant and enjoy a great dinner and a bottle of wine or choose one of the many excellent restaurants offering freshly cooked Irish food and seafood at its best.
